Scots ace Wightman secures medal in 1500m
JAKE Wightman was “buzzing” after earning bronze in the men’s 1500m European Championships final in Berlin last night.
In a fight to the finish, Wightman ended up third in the men’s 1500m final, with Norwegian
17- year- old Jakob Ingebrigtsen winning gold and Poland’s Marcin Lewandowski clinched silver.
“It was a very nerve- racking affair,” 24- year- old Wightman said.
“Up until the last 10 metres, no- one knew where the medals were going, but I’m buzzing to get a bronze. I think everyone expected to contend for a medal and tried to win – I gave good go and I’m proud of my medal.”
Wightman’s bronze was hailed by sportscotland director of high performance Mike Whittingham, who said: “Congratulations to Jake on a brilliant performance in a high- class field. To win a medal at this level of competition is a terrific achievement.
“Jake’s, and other performances from Scottish athletes at the European Championships, show it a that Scottish athletes continue to deliver consistently on the world stage across a range of sports, demonstrating that Scotland’s approach to developing a sporting pathway to performance sport is delivering.”
Whittingham added: “Athletics in Scotland is in a great place with playing memberships of Scottish Athletics on the rise.
“At sportscotland we have made 26 awards to athletics clubs through our Direct Club Investment programme.”
