Lucky Logan as Cambuslang kid lifts Wimbledon junior title

CAMBUSLANG youngster Joseph Logan struggled to contain his delight after lifting a national tennis trophy on the famous grass courts of Wimbledon at the weekend.

Logan was competing in the Road to Wimbledon National 14 & Under Challenge – the UK’s largest grass-court tournament, involving over 10,000 youngsters each year.

And after triumphing at the previous Regional finals, St Aloysius’ College pupil Logan can now lay claim to being one of the best in the country in his age category after winning last week’s National finals at the iconic venue.

Not only did he manage to beat Daniel Griffiths 5-7 6-2 10-8 in Saturday’s thrilling final, Logan was also watched closely by former British No 1 Tim Henman.

And impressing on the court, the 14-year-old admitted the experience had been one of the highlights of his summer.

“It’s great to win at Wimbledon – it’s amazing to get the chance to play on the grass and a really good final,” said Logan.

“The tie-break was quite nervous at the end but I was able to stay focussed enough and get the win.

“It’s brilliant to lift a trophy where some of the legends have played and I felt in good form throughout the week.

“I’d never played on grass before the tournament, but I quite liked how fast it was. Road to Wimbledon has been special because it’s a great experience to play on the grass and to visit Wimbledon.”

Clarkston teenager Heather Barlow, 13, also appeared in the finals and put in a promising showing but saw her adventured end at the second round stage with 6-1 6-1 defeat to Charlotte Johns.
