Scottish fans set for a treat as Hutchy vows to wow
FANS at the Emirates Arena tonight are not only getting their first chance to see in the flesh what our only amateur world champion looks like, they might well be getting a first glimpse at our next professional superstar of the future.
For someone who regards himself as “just an ordinary lad” from Carstairs, Willy Hutchinson isn’t half setting his sights on achieving something extraordinary. While the fifth rung in his professional ladder had originally been set for the undercard of the Carl Frampton and Tyson Fury show at Windsor Park last weekend, he couldn’t be guaranteed a TV slot, and that meant a move to fight in front of his home fans for the first time, on the undercard of MTK Global’s Darragh Foley versus Chris Jenkins show.
“I am very excited about it – the chance to fight in front of all my family and friends, and everyone who followed me through the amateur scene,” Hutchinson told SportTimes.
“I have never fought in Scotland before, so it is great to be able to fight basically in my home town.”
And asked what his ambitions are, he replied: “I suppose you could say Olympic gold, but I am Scotland’s first ever world champion. But amateurs is finished for me. All I want now is one day to be the professional world champion.
“I am just an ordinary lad trying to become world champion, that is all I am.
“The Hutch army is coming up to Glasgow. It isn’t just a team, it is an army. You should see the crowd I bring when not at home, so this one is going to be mad.”
