At the five things we learned from the Suduva stalemate

-

Parkhead side, a comment that was equally valid in recent domestic games.

Even in the first leg against AEK Athens Celtic had looked imposing and threatening, particularly in the first 45 minutes of that tie. Now there seems to be an inhibition about the manner in which they are playing.

4 No French connection Celtic with Odsonne Edouard and Moussa Dembele at the start of the season look as though they would run amok.

Injuries to both strikers have undermined the way that Rodgers wants his team to play this season with two out-and-out forwards and certainly the dynamic of the team looked entirely different just a few weeks ago with both players looking on song.

All the early indications this season suggested that Rodgers would change his shape to go with a 3-5-2 but he has been held back in that respect because of injuries to all three forwards in the opening weeks of the season.

5 Reality check

There is a feeling that in European football a 1-1 draw in European football away from home is something to be satisfied with. Celtic, though, will know that they ought to have turned the screw on this game and won comfortably against a team whom they should be head and shoulders above.

The expectancy is that Celtic will prevail strongly in Glasgow but the current performance levels are sloppy and insipid. They will still likely go through but if there are genuine ambitions to get out of their Europa League group then the standard has to rise quickly.

Rodgers conceded after the game that the overall performance was poor and it will be interesting to see just how he turns the tide a little bit and restores the swagger that had become the club’s hallmark under his tutelage.
