Watt about a Scotland call, says Kennedy

-

IT takes one to know one, as the saying goes, so when Matty Kennedy voices his conviction that Tony Watt, his friend and team-mate, has finally found a home at St Johnstone then it may well be true this time.

Watt was the difference between these teams on Saturday, as aricochet allowed him to scamper beyond the visiting defence and there was a maturity and confidence about the way he slid his finish beyond Jack Hamilton into the corner of the net in the 51st minute.

It was a sixth goal in eight games for a player who finally appears determined to make the most of this latest fresh start. Kennedy has himself endured some tough times in English football after shooting to prominence as a youngster in the Scottish Premiership, and has likewise failed to make the most of loan spells.

Now 23, the former Kilmarnock and Everton winger firmly believes both he and former Cardiff City colleague Watt, still just 24, can settle and thrive at McDiarmid Park.

“I have only been here a month but the gaffer makes you feel welcome and at home,” said Kennedy in the wake of Saints’ first league win of the campaign. “I’m sure it’s the same with Tony. It makes you want to play for the manager.

“It’s been easy to settle in here. We’ve both had a lot of clubs but I just think this club is really good for both of us. You feel at home and it’s a platform.”

Asked if his form could return Watt to the international scene, Kennedy added: “I can’t see why not. If he keeps doing what he is doing you never know.”
