Halliday out to reward his Ibrox saviour Stevie

ANDY HALLIDAY is determined to repay Steven Gerrard’s faith in him after salvaging his Rangers career this summer.

The midfielder was left fighting for his Ibrox future as Gerrard was appointed as boss and tasked with transforming Rangers’ fortunes.

Halliday was part of the squad that the 38-year-old took to Spain for a pre-season training camp and he has made the most of his chance to impress in recent weeks.

He said: “I’m very grateful to the manager for allowing me to be part of the squad. I’ve done okay when I’ve been called on but I’ll get better as we go along.

“I’d be lying if I didn’t say my future at Rangers was looking pretty bleak. The manager showed a bit of faith in me in taking me to Marbella and I thought that could be a turning point.

“I got the chance to show myself over there. I’d been working hard on my fitness during the off-season and I do feel a lot fitter.

“I think the two weeks in Marbella was crucial for me and I’ve had some good chats with the gaffer since then.”

Halliday turned in a solid performance at Fir Park yesterday but couldn’t prevent Rangers dropping two Premiership points against Motherwell.

Striker Kyle Lafferty scored twice against the Steelmen on his first start since re-joining his boyhood heroes on a two-year deal from Hearts.

Halliday said: “It seems pretty typical of Kyle’s career. He’s always involved in something. I’ve only known him for a couple of days but he’s daft!

“He can bring quality to the squad and we saw today he adds a different dimension.”
