Gerrard homes in on Grezda

-

STEVEN Gerrard is closing in on his 13th signing as Rangers boss as winger Eros Grezda gets set to complete a £2m move from Osijek, writes Chris Jack.

The Albanian international has emerged as a target for Gerrard following the injury to winger Jamie Murphy that ruled him out of action for the remainder of the campaign.

The 28-year-old suffered

knee ligament damage in the Betfred Cup win over Kilmarnock and won’t play again this term as Gerrard was hit with a cruel injury blow just weeks into the new season.

That has left Rangers with only youngster Glenn Middleton as backup to wide men Daniel Candeias and Ryan Kent, who moved north of the border on a season-long loan deal from Liverpool earlier in the window.

Gerrard confirmed after the Ladbrokes Premiership draw with Motherwell on Sunday that he was hopeful of adding a defender to his squad in the coming days to provide competition for Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic.

“Hopefully we can get a centre-back in, either on loan or in a permanent deal,” the Rangers manager admitted.

But it is Grezda who is set to become the next man through the door at Ibrox after he travelled to Glasgow to finalise a deal with the Light Blues.

Rangers have already snapped up full-back Borna Barisic (above) from Osijek after he clinched a £1.5m switch just days after Gerrard’s side knocked the Croatian cracks out of the Europa League at the second-round stage.

And now Grezda is set to follow his former teammate in making the switch from the Stadion Gradski to Ibrox before the transfer window closes on Friday.

The 23-year-old did not feature in either leg of the qualifying clash due to injury but Rangers fans will soon get to see him in action.

Grezda only moved to Osijek in May last year from NK Lokomotiva and has also been on the books of Zavr and NK Aluminij in his career so far.
