Flats plan for derelict city school

- BY STACEY MULLEN

A DERELICT East End school could soon be turned into a residential development for new flats.

Proposals have been put forward to transform the former Haghill Primary School and janitor’s house on Marwick Street, which lie in a derelict state.

City planning officials will make a decision this week on the proposals.

A PROPOSAL to transform a derelict East End school into a residential development has been put forward.

Spectrum Properties want to redevelop the former Haghill Primary School and Schoolhouse on Marwick Street.

Their proposal will be discussed at a meeting of Glasgow City Council’s Contracts and Property Committee on Thursday.

The committee has to approve the sale of the school to Spectrum Properties before they take their proposal forward. In a report to the committee, it was revealed the schoolhouse was declared surplus to requirements in 1996 while the school was given the same status in 2004, the year it closed.

A local housing association expressed interest in the site but no plans have come to fruition. The building has also fallen into a state of considerable disrepair but City Property have received an offer of £75,000 for it from Spectrum Properties.

The report said: “City Property is of the opinion that this figure is representative of market value when consideration is given to both the aforementioned condition, refurbishment costs and on-going maintenance an inspection costs.”

Spectrum Properties say they want to create a residential development within the existing school building and schoolhouse, and a four-storey new-build block.

This would offer 51 two-bedroom flats and one three-bedroom house, and associated parking.

Local councillor Allan Casey welcomed the plans, saying: “I welcome the potential redevelopment of the category-B listed former Haghill Primary School which has sadly been left to deteriorate since its closure in 2004.

“This building has been a blight on the community ever since its closure and I welcome the proposal which will see the former school building and janitor schoolhouse restored and refurbished.”
