Rail work warning over September weekend
TRAIN passengers are being warned to expect delays over the September weekend as signalling systems are upgraded.
Network Rail engineers will be completing the latest phase in an £114million upgrade to systems across Lanarkshire.
Passengers are being advised to expect changes to services between Friday and September 25.
There will be no services between Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Central via Shotts from close of service on Friday, until start of service on Tuesday, September 25.
Additionally, there will be no services between Edinburgh and Carlisle via Carstairs on Sunday, September 23.
Network Rail engineers will work with contractor Siemens to replace track circuits, signals and cabling, and to remove redundant kit and equipment.
The work is as part of the final commissioning phase of the Motherwell North Signalling Renewal project and will prepare the Shotts line between Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Central for the introduction of faster trains with more carriages that will run on the route after electrification work has been completed.
Steve Muirhead, Network Rail’s route asset manager for signalling in Scotland, said: “While we appreciate the work will cause some disruption to services, the activities have been planned for one of the quietest periods on the network.”
