Warriors: Prop Fagerson travels despite injury set-back at Cheetahs
GLASGOW Warriors prop Zander Fagerson will stay in South Africa with his team-mates as he begins the recovery process after undergoing an operation on his ankle yesterday.
The 22-year-old international prop suffered the set-back five minutes into the second-half of Saturday’s 52-24 victory over the Toyota Cheetahs in Bloemfontein and he is considered fit enough to travel with the rest of the squad to Cape Town ahead of this weekend’s meeting with the Southern Kings.
The trip is the second leg of their mini-tour of South Africa, as he continues his recuperation before he returns with them to Scotland where he will receive further assessment.
“A more accurate assessment of the injury and an estimated recovery period for the 22-year-old will be provided in due course,” a club spokesman said yesterday.
His international team-mate Stuart Hogg has, however, been sent home early after failing to recover from the ankle problem he was carrying when they set off.
The 26-year-old initially suffered the problem eight minutes into his team’s meeting with Munster 11 days ago, looking to be in considerable pain and receiving treatment on his left ankle. However, he not only returned to the fray to score his side’s second try, but took over the principal kicking responsibilities, not leaving the field until immediately after sending over the penalty that made the game safe, eight minutes from time. He was left out of the meeting with the Cheetahs in the hope that he would recover in time for the meeting with the Kings, but the injury is taking longer to heal than expected.
Winger Robbie Nairn and prop Adam Nicol have consequently been called into the squad for the remainder of the trip.
