Embroidery is sew good for Game of Thrones fans
IF you’re a Game of Thrones fan you won’t want to miss this.
Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) is to be the backdrop to a giant-sized Game of Thrones embroidered mural, which is on display from today.
Impressive needlework depicting an epic threedimensional scene from the hit TV show will be unveiled in the university’s Saltire Centre and remain on display to students, staff and the public until it’s put up for auction in February.
The piece was produced by the Embroiderers’ Guild after they were contacted by HBO, the company that produces Game of Thrones.
They asked for a special stitched artwork to form the backdrop to the DVD release of the show’s fifth series.
Anthea Godfrey, artistic director of the Embroiderers’ Guild and project manager, said: “This has been an amazing project that truly has brought the embroidery community together across the whole of the UK. We are really proud to have been involved.”
The Embroiderers’ Guild led the design and production of the mural and invited other sewers to participate.
The finished piece features one of the most intense battle scenes in TV history – Massacre at Hardhome – and features a White Walker, one of the show’s central antagonists.
Measuring five metres in length and four metres in height, the piece took more than 5000 hours to produce and involved a total of 140 volunteers.
TheEmbroiderers’ Guild has close links with GCU dating back 12 years, especially through its fashion programmes, which is why the university has been selected to display the piece.
