‘Vital we keep the momentum going’

-

RANGERS number two Gary McAllister insists the Light Blues won’t take anything for granted against Ayr.

The Gers return to Betfred Cup action at Ibrox aiming to overcome the Honest Men and book a semi-final berth.

Ian McCall’s side have made a solid start to the Championship campaign and have in-form striker Lawrence Shankland at the head of their attack.

McAllister said: “It’s a crucial game.

“We’re one away from getting to Hampden and two away from a final.

“Things are going pretty well at the moment and it’s vital we keep the momentum going.

“We’ve been strong at Ibrox this season and we have to approach the Ayr game in the same manner in which we approached the last two league games.

“Indeed, our preparation has been very similar to the Villarreal game last week. The demands here and huge and that’s one of the wonderful things about Rangers – the expectation of the fans is always there.

“There’s always that pressure to try and win something.

“This is an opportunity but we have a lot of respect for Ayr.

“I know Ian McCall, we were apprentices together at Motherwell a long, long time ago.

“He’s a good guy and a shrewd manager. Up front, they have a lad scoring freely. There will be dangers there and we have to approach it full on.

“Of late, teams have been coming to Ibrox and putting a low block on. It’s hard to penetrate through.

“It can be difficult, but it’s up to us to find ways of breaking the opposition down.

“But some of the play at the weekend was really encouraging. We scored some super goals.”
