Fundraiser to put her best foot forward in honour of her ‘wee mum’

- BY HOLLY LENNON Reporter

HUNDREDS of families across Glasgow are preparing to take part in a walk to raise vital funds for Alzheimer Scotland.

This year’s annual Glasgow Memory Walk will take place at Kelvingrove Park on Sunday.

Among those taking part will be Laura Boyce who is walking in honour of her mum, Margaret Lowe, who was officially diagnosed with dementia in 2010.

The 38-year-old, from Lenzie, said: “Sadly, my lovely wee mum was officially diagnosed with dementia back in 2010 when she was just 61-years-old. Not something any of us ever expected and sometimes I still think it cannot really be happening.

“Things were happening well before mum’s diagnosis and we’ve very painfully watched her decline for more than 10 years now.

“It’s been an emotional rollercoaster and extremely frustrating given that no medication can help her.

“Dad did an incredible job of caring for mum at home but sadly it all became much bigger than any of us.

“We had no choice but to seek full-time care for her and she’s been in a care home for over five years now.

“It’s been tough but, with a huge amount of support from the amazing care home staff, we’ve got to know mum again and some of our worry has been taken away knowing she’s safe and getting the 24-hour care she needs.

“I’m at a stage now where I need to find something positive in it all and that’s why I want to do this walk to raise lots of money for vital research, raise awareness of this horrendous illness and to make my mum proud.”

Dementia is currently Scotland’s biggest public health issue with around 90,000 people living with dementia.

It is estimated that 20,000 people will be diagnosed with the condition every year by 2020.

Alzheimer Scotland’s chief executive, Henry Simmons, added: “Our Memory Walks are a great way for supporters to raise vital funds with family and friends.

“Every penny raised will go towards our vision – ensuring that nobody faces dementia alone. Our localities across Scotland are committed to providing the best possible care, support and information for everyone living with dementia, as well as making

“Every step you take will help us to make a difference.”
