Events bad for city

-

I AM Glasgow-born but now live in Lanarkshire. I drive to Glasgow weekly, and yesterday was once again met with road closures and general chaos due to yet another event taking over the city centre.

I arrived well before 8am on Saturday but road closed signs and cones were all over the place, despite the event being on Sunday.

I had work to do and this caused me a lot of problems. This also happened a few weeks ago.

It is evident that the city centre is suffering due to store closures and I believe all this event-hosting is a factor.

I for one would not venture into town if I knew in advance about the disruption caused. I expect many shops were quieter on Sunday than usual. The only winners are likely to be fast food outlets and pubs.

These closures also cause traffic congestion and this increases pollution, something the council say they are concerned about. A council so concerned that they let a charity bus into the pedestrian areas of Argyle Street and Buchanan Street.

This bus has a diesel generator trailer which is running all day causing more pollution. This rather goes against the council campaign to stop drivers waiting with engines running with a view to reducing pollution. A hypocritical council.

I would like to hear the reasons for all this going on. Explanations minus waffle. If there is any financial gain due to events being held I doubt it is worthwhile given the damage to trade and commerce.
