Time to nominate your city sports heroes for top gong
IT is time once again to nominate and celebrate the best and boldest sport stars in Glasgow.
Nominations for Glasgow’s 2018 Sports Person of the Year, supported by Evening Times, are now open!
The awards recognise the excellence, achievements and developments from Glasgow and Scottish sportsmen, sportswomen and sports organisations.
Last year’s overall winner for Sports Person of the Year Award was inspirational Sammi Kinghorn, Scottish World Champion wheelchair racer.
And this year organisers are expecting more entries than ever before after another year of sporting prowess for Glasgow.
Depute Leader of Glasgow City Council and chairman of Glasgow Life, Councillor David McDonald, said: “This year has been yet another remarkable year in our proud sporting journey, and Glasgow shone on the global stage with high-profile events such as the inaugural European Championships 2018 taking place in our city.
“Our Sports Person of the Year Awards is one of my favourite annual events in the Glasgow calendar.
“We applaud sport involvement and achievement at every level – from grassroots to the greatest sporting performances of the year.”
From Team Scotland’s best ever overseas performance in the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, to the inaugural 2018 European ChampionLast ships right on our doorstep, Glasgow has truly seen a spectacular year of sport.
Twelve awards will be presented at the awards on Friday, February 1, next year.
Those wishing to do so can nominate as many times as they like in any category.
Nominations are being accepted from today and will close on Friday 9 November.
This year’s categories include Evening Times Disabled Athlete of the Year Award, Glasgow Coach of the Year Award, Evening Times Volunteer of the Year Award and, of course, the overall Sports Person of the Year Award. Previous winners include Sammi Kinghorn, Sir Andy Murray, and Ross Murdoch.
year Sammi also scored the Disabled Athlete of the Year Award 2017 and it was a team celebration as her coach, Ian Mirfin, took Glasgow Coach of the Year 2017.
It was a tie in another category as judges failed to choose between the three schools shortlisted for Primary Sports School of the Year 2017 so awarded the gong to St Rose of Lima, St Brigid’s and St Benedict’s.
At secondary level, all four entrants for Secondary Sports School of the Year 2017 took prizes – including John Paul Academy, St Mungo’s Academy, Shawlands Academy and Whitehill Secondary.
Grassroots sports achievements were also hailed with Glasgow Club of the Year 2017 taken by St Angela’s Participation Centre, which had been shortlisted alongside Gladiators Weightlifting, Drumchapel Table Tennis and Glasgow Disability Tennis Club.
Mr McDonald added: “If you know someone who deserves one of these awards then I’d encourage you to get online and submit an entry. Anyone can get involved and all eligible entries will be considered by our panel.
“The night is always a brilliant celebration of the best sporting talent in the country, and gives us a chance to recognise the incredible efforts made by athletes, coaches and volunteers across Scotland.”
