Random acts of kindness that will help us honour special Kyle

- BY CATRIONA STEWART

A SCHOOLBOY who died just two years after his mother passed away will be remembered by a day of acts of kindness.

Kyle Bremner was described as a deeply kind and generous young man – and his aunt Vicki Dale wants to honour him that way.

She is organising the BIG day of KinDness to be held on what would have been Kyle’s 15th birthday, October 23.

And Vicki is hoping as many people as possible will carry out a random act of kindness in her beloved nephew’s honour.

She said: “After Kyle died we received letters of amazing, uplifting stories telling us how kind Kyle was and how he was always looking after other people first, even though he had suffered this terrible loss.

“I decided I would do 40 acts of kindness this year to keep him in my heart.”

Williamwood High School pupil Kyle was devastated when his mum, Jen, was diagnosed with terminal leiomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer.

But the family, including dad Brem and Kyle’s younger sister Evie, rallied to raise £20,000 for Maggie’s.

Kyle, whose nickname was KD, even made a video for the cancer charity detailing how the illness impacts families and died his hair blue to raise money.

Sadly Jen passed away in October 2015, aged just 46.

And Kyle’s family and friends suffered a second blow when Kyle died in December last year after suffering from a rare form of meningitis.

His school friends put up banners in Williamwood’s reception with his photograph on them and raised money for Maggie’s in his name.

Vicki, who is married to Jen’s brother, wanted to do something more for her nephew and so devised the BIG Day of KinDness.

She said: “I had my twins just before my 40th birthday so a big celebration was off the cards but I still wanted to do something meaningful.

“Jen was given her cancer diagnosis the day after I gave birth and so I wanted to mark that too, not necessarily something related to cancer but something positive.

“And so I did acts of kindness then too and it was a success.”

Vicki’s idea is simple: people can carry out an act of kindness and then record their story and photos by posting on the FB page “The BIG day of KinDness” or on Instagram or Twitter #theBIGdayofKinDness

So far 33 schools have expressed an interest alone with Williamwood High School and Netherlee Primary, where Kyle was a

pupil. Glasgow Clyde College and Vicki’s husband’s department at Glasgow City Council have also pledged to help.

Vicki, from Netherlee, added: “I feel slightly overwhelmed by the response.

“Kyle would certainly approve and he would be thinking of something himself to do and I can imaging him championing it.”
