Water safety drive success

-

A FAMILY whose son drowned have revealed that their campaign for improved safety around the banks of the River Clyde has been a success.

Duncan and Margaret Spiers will meet with council officials to discuss moves to boost safety.

UPGRADES to the Kingston Bridge are set to begin later this month as part of regeneration works for the M8 motorway.

Work on the Newton Street on ramp structure will begin on October 31 and will continue until mid-December.

Phase Two works will begin in the New Year with the overall completion of the works planned for the end of February 2019.

The main M8 motorway will not be affected by these works but drivers will be hit with a reduced speed limit of 40mph and narrowed lanes at the work zone.

Peter McCann, Scotland TranServ’s major bridges manager, said: “The Kingston Bridge and the approach ramps is an integral part of life and business in the West of Scotland.

“It is essential work to maintain and upgrade this vital economic artery.

“The structure and its approaches are now 50 years old and require regular routine maintenance.

“we would ask drivers to either allow additional time for their journeys, seek alternative routes or travel times, consider park and ride or switch to public transport.

During the upgrades workers will replace edge coping, vehicle barriers and expansion joints.

However, transport bosses have said they do not expect peak hour delays on the route.
