Jobs galore for graduates

- BY NIALL CHRISTIE

UNEMPLOYED people from across Glasgow are already reaping the benefits of a six-week training programme offering hospitality skills.

More than a third of graduates from Diageo’s Learning for Life programme have found work in the industry, just weeks after completing the training.

A total of 25 students from across the city took part in the course this summer, with jobs at businesses such as Blythswood Square Hotel, beGIN, Grand Central Hotel and the Howlin’ Wolf snapping up graduates.

Course graduate Martin McSwiggan, 26, said: “I have built up my confidence, qualifications and experience. I was out of work prior to this but through the course I have gained a fantastic job at the Three Craws in Glasgow, where I also completed my work placement.

“I would recommend this course to anyone looking for help and guidance into an exciting career.”

Almost 1,200 unemployed people have graduated from the programme since its launch in 2014, with 78 per cent securing long-term employment.

Diageo’s Nicola Reid added: “The booming hospitality industry in Scotland offers many exciting career opportunities for these graduates, giving them a great chance to secure gainful employment.

“We look forward to finding out what lies ahead for these passionate and hardworking people.”
