It’s a rum do as first distillery for 300 years opens doors in city
THE first rum distillery to open in the city of Glasgow in over 300 years opens this month.
Partick-based Wester Spirit Co will soon be producing more than 6000 bottles of premium spirit every month when the operation gets fully under way.
This represents a 2400 per cent increase in production, as previously the brand had only been able to put 250 bottles per month up for sale.
Spirit Distillery is located in the hive of Partick, a natural home for a distinctive and creative brand to reside amongst the vibrant eclectic mix of bars and eateries
Co-founders Zander Macgregor and Allan Nairn moved to Glasgow for university and have been making the drink for the past year in Perth.
The innovative distillery boasts groundbreaking industry techniques, including the use of a stainless steel still, instead of the traditional copper alternative.
Bosses hope this will provide a “truly unique” taste as a result, indulging customers in the spices, citrus zest and vanilla elements to the drink.
Despite the modern twists, the rum is still rooted in Glasgow’s history.
The brand’s signature spirit is named after the Wester Sugar House Company in Candleriggs which produced rum and refined sugar cane during the 17th century.
Tours around the distillery will be held with a masterclass in the history and process of rum production, ending with the opportunity for guests to create their own cocktail.
However, these are not expected to begin until early next year.
In the meantime, the distillery will also host pop-up restaurants and secret gigs, which kicked off last week with collective Sofar Sounds Glasgow hosting their most recent event in the distillery.
