A COMMUNITY centre on the South Side of Glasgow has secured almost £1million in refurbishment cash from the Big Lottery Fund.

The Kinning Park Complex will receive £998,530 to develop the centre for local artists and musicians.

The award will be used to give the centre a new lease of life, providing studio space for artists, an events and performance space for community groups.

It is among 17 grants worth £4.3m being dished out to community projects in Scotland.

Also receiving awards are PEEK (Possibilities for Each and Every Kid) in the East End of Glasgow which receives £350,000 and Celtic FC Foundation which nets £315,429.

Community Led Action and Support Project in Stevenston, North Ayrshire, meanwhile, will use its £306,199 award to develop its Helping Older People Evolve (HOPE) project.

People with Parkinson’s disease or other neurological conditions will benefit from an award of £61,030 to Parkinson’s Self Help Group in North Lanarkshire.

Older people with disabilities will benefit from North Ayrshire Forum on Disability’s £150,000 grant and Healthy Valleys in South Lanarkshire will use its £322,946 funding to deliver its Resilient Families project.

The funding will be used to provide a tailored support group focusing on wellbeing, educational, counselling, and intensive support activities.

The project will help parents develop the knowledge, skills, resilience and confidence they need to manage their circumstances.

Also receiving awards in the local authority area are Lanark Community Centre, £99,940 and The Manda Centre, £43,488, which will help people affected by murder and suicide.

Maureen McGinn, chairwoman of Big Lottery Fund Scotland, said the funding would help change people’s lives: “Every time someone buys a National Lottery ticket it raises vital funds which can help local community groups to change lives.

“I am delighted that £4.3m of this funding is today going to projects to create stronger, more connected communities across Scotland.

“I wish each of these groups every success as they go on to expand their work for the benefit of thousands of people, many of whom are going through a difficult time in their lives.”
