Help at HAND ...
THE range of services available in Scotland to help older or disabled people to live safely in their own homes is extensive and practical and can include a complete cleaning service, laundry at home or launderette, a shopping service, collection of prescriptions and payment of bills. Meals can be made and befriending and companionship are offered to give carers a well-deserved break. There are some rather more unexpected services such as pet care which may seem like a minor issue, but can mean that a much-loved animal companion is able to stay with their owner and be included in the support provided. Other services help people get out and about when they don’t have the confidence to go alone. Medical appointments, supermarket, bank, theatre visits or social occasions can all be possible with a companion. Shopping services include grocery shopping, clothing or buying gifts for family and friends, giving people much valued independence with appropriate support.
FIND PROPER SUPPORT
Some services can be provided by local authorities and some privately, so it’s always best to check what can be paid for or need to be funded by the individual. Younger people can be equally isolated but tend to be a more hidden group, though there is support and companionship for all ages. Some organisations take the approach of encouraging those on their own to get involved in supporting others, which can both improve their social lives and their confidence. Church groups, hospices and charities encourage people to get in touch with them so check what’s available locally.
