Top tourism talent is honoured at awards bash

TOURISM talent in the city of Glasgow has been recognised at the country’s most prestigiou­s tourism awards.

Two business took home coveted prizes at the Scottish Thistle Awards regional finals at the Orna Mor on Thursday.

Kelvingrov­e Art Gallery & Museum was named Best Visitor Attraction. As Scotland’s most visited free attraction, it was praised by judges for its modern approach to promoting a traditiona­l attraction.

With 22 themed, state-of-the-art galleries displaying an astonishin­g 8000 objects, the collection­s are extensive, wide-ranging and internatio­nally-significan­t.

Elsewhere, Celtic Connection­s Festival received the award for Best Cultural Event or Festival. The winter festival attracts more than 130,000 visitors over 18 days and is a wellestabl­ished fixture on the Scottish music scene.

The festival was commended by judges for its excellent programme which consistent­ly expands into new areas, new venues and audiences.

Jade Hewat, festival director for Celtic Connection­s, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won the ‘Best Cultural Event or Festival’ category at the prestigiou­s Scottish Thistle Awards.

“The festival is honoured to be recognised once again as a cultural cornerston­e of the Scottish events calendar.”
