Robinson ready to move players on despite record profits at Well

- BY GRAEME MACPHERSON

MOTHERWELL manager Steve Robinson know he will need to keep selling players in every window despite the club posting record profits of nearly £1.8m this week.

Much of that income came from the transfers of Ben Heneghan and Louis Moult, and Robinson expects he will need to sell more players to help keep the club afloat.

That is a frustrating scenario for any manager to have to deal with but the Northern Irishman, whose side travel to Livingston today, knows it has to be this way. He said: “What it says in the accounts and what’s in the bank are two different things. I know there’s no £1.8m hiding below the floorboards.

“We’ve sold players in every transfer window that I’ve been here. And when you’re building something and you lose your best player every window that can be frustrating. But that’s not something I didn’t know when I took the job. That’s how Motherwell survive.

“We’ve got historic debt that everyone is aware of and the club costs a lot of money to run. But the board of directors give me absolutely everything they can to make the football club work.”

Motherwell were the first and still one of only two sides to have won at Livingston this season. Despite that proud record, Robinson would rather every Premiership game was played on grass.

He added: “I don’t like giving players any kind of excuse so we’ve trained on Astroturf all week. I think if every game was on grass it would be better for the league. But every club has their own reasons for having artificial pitches.

“It won’t affect our selection. You just have to go with a positive mindset and think it’s still 11 versus 11. Win, lose or draw I won’t be using the pitch as an excuse.”
