Youngsters get into St Andrew’s Day spirit with special conga

- BY LOUISE HOUSTON

Dozens of school children descended on Hampden to take part in a very special conga to mark St Andrew’s Day and raise funds for charity.

The St Andrew’s Day Conga was hosted at the national stadium as part of Scotland’s first St Andrew’s Fair Saturday, which is extending St Andrew’s Day celebrations with a festival of cultural events today that promote fairness and sharing while raising funds for good causes.

Children from primary schools across Glasgow wrapped up against the chill and warmed themselves up by creating a conga line round the pitch. The event raised funds and awareness for Glasgow the Caring City, a charity which supports children in crisis at home and overseas.

St Andrew’s Fair Saturday is part of Scotland’s Winter Festivals and supports the #MakeSomeonesDay campaign.

The initiative urges Scots to spread a little kindness to mark St Andrew’s Day, whether it’s going along and supporting a local Fair Saturday event, popping in to check on an elderly neighbour or donating clothes to a charity shop.

Minister of Cathcart Old Parish Church in Glasgow, Rev Neil Galbraith, who organised the conga and founded Glasgow the Caring City, said: “Seeing so many children working together as a team and enjoying themselves has been really uplifting.

“The conga isn’t just about having fun though. Like the other St Andrew’s Fair Saturday events, it is a great platform for raising funds and awareness for the charity and will enable us to help more of the most disadvantaged young people in Scotland and overseas.”

Originating in Spain in 2014, Fair Saturday is a global movement to boost culture and social empathy, acknowledging that the arts are powerful force for good which have a positive impact on wellbeing and encourage inclusiveness.
