Hammill’s hammer from own half helps Saints on way to a valuable point

- BY DARREN JOHNSTONE AT EASTER ROAD

ST MIRREN manager Oran Kearney hailed Adam Hammill’s remarkable penchant for scoring stunning goals after the forward netted from inside his own half in last night’s 2-2 draw at Hibs.

Just 11 days after beating Hearts goalkeeper Zdenek Zlamal from 40 yards in the victory over Craig Levein’s side, Hammill this time embarrassed Hibs shotstopper Adam Bogdan, beating the Hungarian from an even greater distance.

Oli Shaw levelled for the hosts before an Efe Ambrose own goal restored Saints’ lead.

However, Ryan Porteous earned Hibs a point with a header from Stevie Mallan’s corner in the 72nd minute.

Kearney was disappointed his team failed to see the game out but the Northern Irishman was not short in offering praise of Hammill.

He said: “It’s like deja vu from a couple of weeks ago – the same again.

“It’s one thing to see it, another to execute it – and this one is from even further out. It’s a great strike.

“Adam would attempt those in training from time to time and get a bit of stick. He won’t get any now.”

Basement side Dundee closed the gap at the bottom to one point and Kearney was ultimately frustrated his side allowed Hibs to deny them only their third league win.

He added: “Possibly before the game, coming here we would have been happy with point. But being 2-1 up with 15 minutes to go, it’s disappointing.

“The players are disappointed and that is probably a good sign. They are desperate to get back in and get three points.”

Hammill set the game alight in the sixth minute when he left Bogdan red-faced
