Trade waste curbs hit South Side businesses

- BY GRAEME MURRAY

COUNCIL chiefs are to rollout commercial waste scheme on the South Side of Glasgow.

They say the project has been “successful” in the City Centre and the north-west, – – but its introduction in these areas was not without its problems.

A total of four areas will be affected by the new rules on trade waste and the South Side is the latest which must be compliant, ahead of the North East

The authority has changed its rules on how businesses deal with trade waste containers in public spaces.

And trade waste is only allowed on streets for one hour for a pre-arranged time slot which in the South Side will be between 7.30am and 12am, 2pm and 6pm and 1pm. No glass from businesses will be uplifted after 11pm.

A council spokesman said: “Within these times, waste is only allowed to be put out for up to one hour.

“It is your responsibility to arrange when your waste will be collected with your waste contractor.

“If your waste remains uncollected, you should remove it from the street, store it on your premises and contact your waste contractor to rearrange collection.

“All bags and bins must be clearly marked with your business’ names and time of collection.

“Waste may only be placed on the street when the business is staffed and never overnight.”

The curbs have been gradually introduced after initial resistance from businesses in the City Centre when it was introduced in March this year.

The second area to face commercial waste restrictions was the North West in September, followed by the Southside on Saturday.

The final area to be affected by the new rules will be the North East on March 2, 2019.

In May, the Evening Times urged the council to re-think a scheme, which removed commercial waste bins from City Centre streets to make the area ‘more appealing’ for tourists.

Businesses in the City Centre say curbs have resulted in bar workers “taking binbags home in their cars” to avoid repercussions.

A spokesman for The Griffin Bar said: “We are not really affected because we have our waste collected privately.

“But I’ve heard of people taking their binbags home in cars.”
