Theesel do nicely as Largs boss targets better finish

- BY JIM O’DONNELL

THE real surprise packets in the Premiership are Largs Thistle who have excelled since winning promotion as last season’s third best Super First Division side.

But Theesel manager Stuart ‘Arnie’ Davidson insists his playing charges can do better than their current fifth place. And the renowned ex-Auchinleck Talbot midfield battler also retains designs on Macron Scottish Junior Cup glory and is keeping fingers crossed in the hope of landing a home tie in tonight’s Rocksport Radio staged fifth-round draw (8PM).

Last weekend’s 6-0 hammering of Kilbirnie Ladeside in which Australian striker Joe Knowles bagged a hat-trick brought Arnie to admit: “Joe previously played for Perth Glory at first-team level and is still adjusting to the rough edges of the Junior game but he certainly knows the way to goal.

“Long may it last but I cannot put a finger on specific reasons other than to say we are always going to create openings with our forward-going midfield where the former Irvine Meadow wide player Ben Black and Ayr United loan signing Stuart Faulds have been playing out of their skins.

“I’m not going to pretend everything in our garden is rosey – because it’s not and I can very quickly recall moments where I’ve been less than happy – losing 2-1 to Lesmahagow in the West of Scotland Cup for instance – but overall there have been more highs than lows .”
