BROADCASTERS BT Sport last night made a surprise offer to allow Scottish referees to trial Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology by accessing footage of their live TV matches.

The media company will lose their rights to screen the Ladbrokes Premiership and the Betfred Cup at the end of next season but executive producer Grant Phillips took to social media yesterday to extend the offer. While VAR was generally judged in a positive light after this summer’s World Cup in Russia and will be incorporated into both Champions League and Europa League knockout games this season, SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster has previously said that the cost of installing it in Scottish grounds could be prohibitive.

“The SPFL and referee chiefs at the SFA are welcome to trial VAR on our Scottish matches, we’re sure the refs would welcome the assistance,” tweeted Phillips.

“There is a lot of anger directed at our referees,” tweeted presenter Darrell Currie (inset). “Well, here you go. We @btsportfootball are offering the SPFL and SFA to trial VAR on our live games . . . let’s do it?”
