Virgil savours win after netting first league goal

WOLVES 0 LIVERPOOL 2

VIRGIL van Dijk insisted it was the three points that gave him the most pleasure after his strike helped Liverpool to move four points clear at the top of the Premier League last night.

Mohamed Salah (below) had opened the scoring before the former Celtic ace doubled the advantage en route to a deserved 2-0 win at Wolves.

The forward scored his 14th goal of the season before setting up Van Dijk’s clincher in the second half at Molineux.

Van Dijk’s goal was his first in the league for the Reds and, asked if the strike or the clean sheet gave him more pleasure, the Dutchman said on Sky Sports: “The win, I think the win was very important.

“Wolves are very good, they’ve showed it all season.”

Liverpool have conceded just seven goals in 18 league games, even though Van Dijk has played alongside four different central defensive partners. Dejan Lovren partnered him against Wolves.

He said he had not had to adapt his game, though, adding: “All my partners are very good and it’s a joy to play with all of them.”

Jurgen Klopp’s unbeaten Reds will now top the table on Christmas Day regardless of Man City’s result against Crystal Palace today.

In eight of the last nine campaigns the team top at Christmas has gone on to win the league – except Liverpool under Brendan Rodgers in 2013.

Morgan Gibbs-White should have pulled a goal back in the last minute but shot into the side-netting after Andy Robertson’s mistake.
