Kick-off for the Star Sixes in Glasgow

HOLLY LENNON looks at what is in store at city venues

-

The venue will be hosting some of the biggest pop stars on the planet

AS an incredible 2018 comes to an end, it seems only right to look forward to what next year has in store.

Following the loss of the O2 ABC, the shape of Glasgow’s gig landscape has shifted and is likely to continue changing over the next few years.

More acts are appearing at venues including The Garage and the Classic Grand or upsizing to parent venue the O2 Academy, to compensate for the loss of the ABC’s mediumsized rooms.

Fans can also expect to see more acts appearing at SWG3 Warehouse.

Over the course of the year, the Finnieston venue has proved its versatility through gigs in their Galvanisers Yard and intimate shows in the TV Studio.

And heading into 2019, it’s set to become even more popular with shows from alternative R&B band The Internet, Swedish DJ Alesso and folk-rock band Deaf Havana, who returned to form in 2018 with the release of their fifth album Rituals.

Going into its sixth year, the SSE Hydro have already booked in some big name acts.

The venue will be hosting some of the biggest pop stars on the planet, including Take That, Little Mix, Backstreet Boys, Ariana Grande and the one and only Cher.

Rappers Post Malone and Nicki Minaj will also be stopping off in the city to light up the arena.

One to look out for, though, will be Twenty-One Pilots who have become known for their theatrical live shows.

Bandmates Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun turn their hand to a whole host of instruments including keyboard, bass, ukulele, drums, trumpet and tambourine.

There might only be two of them but they can make an impressive amount of noise.

The year will also see some of the best Scottish acts playing to a home crowd – which is never one to miss.

Chvrches will be returning to their hometown for a show at the SSE Hydro. The band last played in the city as part of TRNSMT festival back in July, but will be returning to perform latest album Love is Dead for the first time.

As well as joining the stellar Glasgow Summer Sessions line-up, The Twilight Sad will be doing a full set at Barrowland Ballroom.

Embarking on her own tour,

Nina Nesbitt will be performing at SWG3.

The singer-songwriting has had a busy 2018 managing to find time to support both Lewis Capaldi and Clean Bandit on tour, headlining the King Tut’s stage at TRNSMT and releasing tonnes of new music.

Fresh from their sold-out at the Ballowland Ballroom, Fatherson will be back on the road in May – this time at the O2 Academy.

The Kilmarnock-trio recently released third album The Sum of All Your Parts, which they described as their best work to date. If you fail to catch any of the above, there is sure to be a host of Scottish treats appearing at TRNSMT festival scheduled for July 12 to 14.

Also appearing during festival season at the Summer Sessions will be The Cure, Mogwai, Foo Fighters and The 1975.
