When Jags won Tennents’ Sixes

-

WITH former stars like Michael Owen, Emile Heskey Robert Pires and Jay Jay Okocha, as well as a clutch of Scotland and Old Firm favourites lining up at the SSE Hydro, our readers were enchanted by the Star Sixes this week...

Jim (Bearsden) asks: I enjoyed watching the Star Sixes event in Glasgow over the weekend. Seeing all the old players brought back memories of the Tennents’ Sixes. Could you provide details of who won the first tournament and who the last winners of the competition were?

A: The first Tennents’ Sixes took place in January 1984 at Falkirk’s Coasters Arena, nine teams took part in the competition – Rangers, Celtic, Hearts, Hibs, St Johnstone, Dundee, Dundee United, Motherwell and St Mirren. Rangers beat Dundee 6-4 in the final.

The last Tennents’ Sixes tournament took place in January 1993 at the SECC, there were two groups of five teams with the top two advancing to the semi-finals. Jackie (Maryhill) asks: The Jags face a classic six-pointer against fellow relegation strugglers Falkirk on Saturday. Could you provide details of a happier meeting between the sides for us Partick fans from the 2001-02 season when we beat them 5-1?

A: The game you are thinking of took place in November 2001. Paul Walker gave Thistle a first-half lead but most of the excitement took place after the break.

Falkirk went two behind when Camille Oponga scored an own goal. Paul Wright pulled one back for Falkirk from the penalty spot after Stephen Craigan was sent off for a foul on Kevin McAllister. But the home side would score three more goals, two from Gerry Britton and one from James McKinstry to make it 5-1 and give the Jags a comfortable win.
