Avenues project would link with roof

-

THE roof over the M8 and work to create public space at Charing Cross would link with the city centre Avenues project at Sauchiehall Street.

The street is the first of several to be redeveloped giving more priority to walking and cycling and reducing the number of lanes for cars.

Work on the project was affected by road closures due to the Art School fire last year but the council is hopeful it will still be competed this year.

Some sections are already open to pedestrians.

The section from Rose Street to Douglas Street is almost complete and between Elmbank Street and Pitt Street is open.

Work is now taking place on the stretch between St George’s Road and Elmbank Street.

The council said that completion depends on when it is safe to access the road outside the 02 ABC building which was severely damaged in the fire.

However while that section is closed work was rescheduled to take place on the other parts of the street.

It will create a wider pavement and separate cycleway on new pavement lined with trees on the north side of the street with reduced space for traffic on the road all the way from Charing Cross to the pedestrian precinct at Rose Street.

Any work on the M8 project will connect to the Avenues at St Georges Road at Charing Cross.
