Historic city centre bar to reopen after refurbishment

-

A POPULAR and historic Glasgow bar has closed for refurbishment.

Sloans Bar and Restaurant closed on Monday until January 20 for “maintenance and TLC”.

The Argyle Street eatery will reopen on Monday, January 21, and promised guests an itinerary full of exciting events.

It’s not yet known what work is taking place at the site, however, some diners have expressed concern any refurbishment could detract from the historic interior.

One reader told the Evening Times: “We were going to meet at Sloan’s tomorrow night to celebrate the fact that we had our wedding reception there 15 years ago, only to discover that it is closed for ‘refurbishment’.

“We are concerned, as I am sure so many couples, who may have chosen their ring in the historic Argyle Arcade and/or gone on to enjoy hospitality at Sloan’s would be, given the results of other refurbishments/ destruction of historic interiors in this city.”

She added: “The building is absolutely beautiful and has an ‘A’ listed interior and exterior, which includes a fantastic Art Nouveau ballroom. It is one of the last of the coaching inns in Glasgow still standing. Wonderfully, it also has both the entrance/exit routes, to the front elevation clear and extant as such, it should be protected.”

The bar has insisted only necessary works is taking place.
