SHOCK AS COUPLE FOUND DEAD

Neighbours ‘devastated’ after discovery in flat

- MASON BOYCOTT-OWEN

POLICE are investigating whether a gas leak killed a couple found dead in their home. Shocked neighbours described the incident as ‘a tragedy’.

THE deaths of a man and a woman whose bodies were found in a flat may have been caused by a gas leak.

Emergency services were called to the four in a block in the South Side after the alarm was raised yesterday morning.

Neighbours were shocked to learn of the tragedy and said the couple had not been seen for days.

Investigations are under way and a post mortem is to be carried out, but it is thought their deaths could be connected to a gas incident.

Specialist gas investigators were at the scene, and fire officers told neighbours the incident may be gas related.

Police and fire crews turned up at the flat. Officers, paramedics and fire crews raced to Stoneside Square, near Thornliebank, just after 10am after receiving a report of a concern for a person.

Officers are currently treating the deaths as “unexplained”. A cordon was in place while investigations into the cause of the deaths were carried out.

One resident, who has lived in the area for 10 years, described the news as a “tragedy” and said his fellow neighbours are “devastated” at the news.

The man, who did not want to be named, told the Evening Times: “It was a man and a woman who lived there. They’ve been there for about a year, but I haven’t seen them in about three days.

“The man was a bricklayer and a good worker,” they said.

Fire crews knocked on the doors of nearby residents who were told the couple’s death may have been gas related.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Officers were alerted to a report of a concern for a person at around 10.10am.

“Emergency services attended and two bodies were found within a property in Stoneside Square, Eastwood, near Thornliebank.

“Emergency services remain at the scene to establish the circumstances. However, the deaths are currently being treated as unexplained.

“Police are working with

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said were called to the scene around 11.30am. A spokeswoman said: “Operations Control mobilised a number of resources to Stoneside Square, where crews currently remain in attendance.”

The cause of death is unknown as police inquiries continue.
