College chief gives backing over fight to save O2 ABC
THE head of a city college has become the latest high profile name to back saving the demolition-threatened ABC.
Alan Sherry, principal for Glasgow Kelvin College, took to Twitter to call for people to sign a petition asking for the listed building to be rescued.
The Evening Times revealed last week that the much-loved city music venue is at risk of being razed following last June’s devastating fire at the Glasgow School of Art.
An application from the site’s owners has been submitted to Glasgow City Council building.
The building’s roof collapsed during the blaze, the second to hit the world famous art school.
A petition asking that the building is saved has now gained more than 9400 signatures since last week.
Mr Sherry said the venue had given valuable work experience opportunities for for Glasgow Kelvin College students.
He tweeted: “It would good if people would sign the petition as the venue gave valuable work experience opportunities for sound engineering students [at to demolish the Glasgow Kelvin College].
“More than just a music venue one with a commitment to improving the work chances of students.”
Wooden boards have been fixed to the windows and entrances of the O2 ABC, Campus nightclub and neighbouring properties, including City Cutz barbers, Wok Way and California restaurant.
Despite the council providing access to the site to the building owner’s insurers, loss adjusters and structural engineers, they say they have been given no indication of what the landlord intends to do with the buildings.
The C-listed O2 ABC has seen many incarnations in its history, from cinema to circus and an ice rink.
