McGregor: Whole country would be buzzing off fight against Farooq

-

LEE McGregor admits he is desperate for an all-Scottish showdown with Kash Farooq for the British bantamweight title.

McGregor got his hands on the Commonwealth belt when he overcame Cameroonian fighter Thomas Essomba in London last October in only his fifth professional bout.

Glasgow boxer Farooq, who has won all of his 11 fights, will attempt to defend the Lonsdale belt for a second time when he enters the ring with Kyle Williams in April but McGregor hopes the pair can lock horns at some point during 2019.

Edinburgh-born McGregor, who is a stablemate of WBC Silver super lightweight champion Josh Taylor and managed by Barry McGuigan, said: “I think it’s a huge fight for Scotland, the whole country would be buzzing off that fight.

“It could possibly be bigger down the line but things happen and the fight might not happen and I don’t want to miss that opportunity.

“I don’t want the fans in Scotland to miss out on a massive opportunity of two young unbeaten fighters putting it all on the line.

“Things might happen, I’m big for this weight – I might outgrow this weight and then it will never happen and everyone is going to be disappointed so I’d love that fight.”

Speaking to Boxing Social, McGregor added: “I’d take it next week, it’s just my team have a plan and their plan is to get the fight this year. He’s defending his British title soon and I’ll be defending my Commonwealth soon.

“We’ve both got fights coming up but why not, if we both win in the next fight, get it on?

“I’ve heard they’re keen on the fight as well.

“It makes sense and the fans would be in for a treat.”
