England warn Wales to target Sinckler at own risk

ENGLAND

Warren Gatland’s claim that Kyle Sinckler is a “timebomb” has led to England wishing Wales luck if they attempt to exploit his short fuse. Gatland, who picked Sinckler for all three Tests during the 2017 Lions tour to New Zealand, believes there is a “challenge with his temperament... other players are aware of” but has denied there is a plan to take advantage of any vulnerability during the crucial Six Nations clash at the Principality Stadium. The 25-year-old prop has already served a seven-week ban for making contact with the eye area of an opponent on club duty, while in the win over France a fortnight ago he slapped France flanker Arthur Iturria on the top of his head, prompting a reminder of rugby’s values from referee Nigel Owens. Sinckler is also an accomplished sledger who can often be heard directing verbal darts at the opposition. Against Ireland on February 2 he was embroiled in a spat with Peter O’Mahony. England attack coach Scott Wisemantel has cautioned against trying to wind him up. “If they target him then they’re leaving 14 other blokes to do their jobs, so good luck,” Wisemantel said. “We saw in the Australia game during the autumn that he has a quick wit and can refocus very quickly. It’s probably Warren trying to stir the pot a bit. “On the edge is the way he plays the game. Do you really want to take that away from someone? I don’t think so. He knows how to control himself and I don’t think it’s an issue at all.”

WALES

Captain Alun Wyn Jones says “there is more in us” ahead of his team’s Guinness Six Nations showdown with England today. The two remaining unbeaten teams in this season’s tournament go head to head in what is effectively a title eliminator at the Principality Stadium. Wales are unbeaten for a year, winning their last 11 games to equal the national record set between 1907 and 1910. “As a squad, we are very real about our performances of late,” said Jones, who will make a record 18th appearance for a player from any country against England. “To get the win is the most important thing, and people sometimes forget how you win. It’s all about the W, particularly at this level. “There is more in us, and hopefully we can do that tomorrow.”

IRELAND

Joe Schmidt has backed Sean Cronin to put pressure on rested captain Rory Best when the 32-year-old hooker makes his full Guinness Six Nations debut on his 68th cap. Ireland skipper Best has been rested, along with the likes of Robbie Henshaw, as Schmidt’s men take on Italy at the Stadio Olimpico tomorrow. Asked if this is Cronin’s big chance to put the squeeze on Ireland skipper Best, head coach Schmidt replied: “I’m sure that’s his intention, as much as he’s very team-orientated. He will personally want to put his best foot forward.”
