Pioneering brand that’s helping to put city’s style on the map

- with IONA TURNER

ASK most people in the creative industry about Glasgow’s place on the fashion map and unfortunately they would probably tell you it’s pretty non-existent.

In my opinion, that’s not the case but I do have to admit that it can be pretty difficult for budding brands and those desperate for a career in clothing to find a path here in the city.

That’s why I was pleasantly surprised to learn about a brand, started in Glasgow, which not only brings edgy new looks to style savvy city-goers but also sets out to boost other brands who want to break into the industry.

PPLRStrange was launched by Emma Russell last year as a fashion brand but the 23-year-old quickly realised that her real passion came from helping to create a platform for others to follow their dreams and kick start their own creative projects.

She told me: “I felt like Glasgow was lacking a creative platform for people.

“I wanted to break down the stigma that it isn’t creative enough or doesn’t have enough jobs for people within creative industries.”

The brand now hosts events and talks which bring industry experts, up-and-coming brands and young creatives together.

One of the things I immediately loved about PPLRStrange is the CREATE industry talks which they hold for young creatives to give them advice on how to start a business, build a following and be their own boss.

In addition to these talks, the former Glasgow Caledonian student also told me that she organises pop-up events which encourage local brands to come together under one roof. Each event is held at a new venue and features new music and new entertainment alongside the brands.

She said: “The pop-ups and events are a chance for young brands, budding designers and emerging street wear labels to sell their stuff and showcase work to the public.”

The next CREATE talk will be by the founder of Glasgow clothing brand Isolated Heroes, Samantha Paton, on March 16 at Hummingbird on Bath Street, and tickets must be purchased in advance. Emma will also be hosting a stylish yet sustainable pop-up on April 6 at The Vacant Space.
