Rowdy students slammed by neighbours in West End

- BY DREW SANDELANDS Local Democracy Reporter

ANGRY West End residents claim nightmare neighbours have urinated on cars and broken into a flat after rowdy student nights.

Frustrated Lansdowne Crescent locals made the claims in front of licensing chiefs as landlord James Munro bid to renew his HMO (Housing in Multiple Occupation) licence.

Councillors ruled in New York-based Mr Munro’s favour but urged his agent to meet with residents to address any outstanding issues.

Pauline Stewart, Kathryn Young and Steve Bailey, who live near the landlord’s Kelvinbridge flat, objected to his application for a licence.

Ms Stewart claimed residents had been seen urinating in the close and on cars during regular parties at the property.

“We have tried to resolve this issue with the owner,” she said. “Nothing gets done.

“One tenant broke into Steve Bailey’s flat, he was so drunk he didn’t know where he was. The police had to be called.

“We’ve had arguments, we’ve tried everything – it’s hard to speak to them. It’s difficult to get to sleep. They’re behaving like it’s student accommodation.

“It’s desperation that has brought us here. I don’t think Mr Munro would tolerate what we’ve had to tolerate.”

Ms Young, who has lived in the area for over 30 years, said “shouting and bawling” students leave at 11.30pm and return at 2.30am.

“Over 10 years we’ve had apologies by email, it’s just not good enough. We have to police it. It takes weeks of emails to get anything done.”

The pair claimed a toilet had been left outside the flat for a week and a cooker had also been abandoned.

A representative for Mr Munro said this was when rooms in the flat were being refurbished. She said most of the complaints related to incidents from over four years ago.

“They have my personal mobile number and personal email address. They can contact me at any time.

“Mr Munro is a really good landlord. He’s fully involved, he’s always on the phone to me.

“I want to build bridges, I want to move forward. If there is a problem, please contact us.”

In a letter to the licensing committee, Mr Munro said only mature students would be considered when the current tenancy ends later this year.
