Politicians object to plans to pull down O2 ABC

GLASGOW MPs and a MSP have objected to plans to demolish the ABC building in Sauchiehall Street.

An application to knock down the whole building, after it suffered extensive damage from the fire at Glasgow School of Art last summer, has been submitted with the council.

However, two SNP and one Labour politician in the city are against the demolition.

Glasgow Central SNP MP, Alison Thewliss Paul Sweeney, Labour Glasgow North East MP and Kelvin SNP MSP, Sandra White have written to the council with formal objections.

Ms Thewliss said: “I am aware that the damage sustained by the building is extensive, and that its current state will present considerable challenges regardless of what next steps the council decide on.

“It’s crucial however that every effort be made to retain as much of the existing structure as possible.”

Ms White said: “To demolish this venue would be a cultural crime and I will continue to work with colleagues and the local community in order to save the ABC.”

A report has deemed the ABC not “economically salvageable”, with another suggesting that the front elevation at Sauchiehall Street be “safely demolished” to allow for safe access to other parts of the structure.

Mr Sweeney has also officially objected and opposed the demolition stating access can be achieved by another route.

He said: “The social history and architectural merit of this building is significant and its entire demolition would be hugely detrimental to the amenity of the city of Glasgow.”
