Teacher faces licence loss after car horror

- BY MAXINE McARTHUR

A TEACHER who was jailed for hitting another man with a car and driving along a busy city centre street as the victim clung to the roof of the vehicle could be struck off.

The man, who was 24 at the time of the horror smash, was convicted at Glasgow Sheriff Court on September 7, 2017, of causing the victim serious injury by hitting him with the car and driving at excessive speed through Glassford Street, Stockwell Street and Howard Street in November 2015.

He also failed to comply with red traffic lights and caused the man to be thrown from the car resulting in his “permanent disfigurement, permanent impairment and to the danger of his life”.

The man was also convicted of failing to stop and provide his name or details of the collision or vehicle following the incident.

It’s understood the victim, who was aged 47 at the time of incident, stepped off the pavement in Glassford Street around 3am on November 14, 2015.

He was reportedly thrown onto the bonnet of the car before being flung off, resulting in a serious head injury and broken bones.

The teacher, whose name has not been released by the General Teaching Council for Scotland, was jailed for 18 months and disqualified from driving for 45 months on October 9, 2017. His licence was also endorsed.

He will go before the GTCS tomorrow to determine if he is fit to continue teaching, however, it is unknown where he worked as a teacher prior to the incident.

The hearing is scheduled to last for one day.
