BAE’s Kareen lands top apprentice prize
A FEMALE apprentice from Glasgow won an outstanding achievement award at the BAE Systems National Apprentice awards.
Sheet metal apprentice Kareen McQuade was commended for juggling two young children, pregnancy, working full time and going to college while undergoing her apprenticeship.
The 37-year-old was presented with her award at the company’s annual ceremony in Leeds, celebrating the talent and potential of their apprentices
Kareen said: “I believe that as a female, it’s important for me to promote and attract more women into the ship building industry.
“At the age of 37 I believe I have achieved and learned a lot throughout this apprenticeship and I want others to know that it is never too late to take charge of their career path, regardless of age or gender.”
She added: “I love the fact that both my children have seen how much work and dedication I have put into my apprenticeship and how much I have gained from the role.”
Steve Fogg, Managing Director, Shared Services, BAE Systems, added: “We are fortunate to employ some of the best talent in the industry, and our business is no doubt enriched by their continuing hard work and enthusiasm. The BAE Systems Apprentice Awards lets us celebrate their great work.”
Meanwhile, a group of BAE Systems apprentices marked International Women’s Day by visiting a girls’ school in Glasgow this week to launch a 2019 education partnership between the Company and Notre Dame High school.
The partnership will see BAE Systems apprentices and employees engage with pupils through regular activities aimed at encouraging an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects and engineering related careers. The partnership will also provide an opportunity for some pupils to take part in the BAE Systems work experience programme.
