Glasgow’s big Christmas countdown... you’ll Love it

- BY STEPH BRAWN

DATES for the popular Glasgow Loves Christmas events have been released as the city gears up for the busy festive period once more.

The ballot for the muchanticipated Christmas lights switch-on on Sunday, November 17 has already opened and applications will be accepted until 11.59pm on Sunday.

Elsewhere, the Style Mile Christmas Carnival will be held on Sunday, November 24 and will bring music, dance and spectacle to the heart of the city. On the same day, the George Square Christmas market will open.

That will follow the launch of the St Enoch equivalent on Saturday, November 9, with visitors able to walk right into culinary delights and handmade gifts right off the Subway.

The traditional Blessing Of The Crib event is scheduled for Wednesday, December 4 in George Square, while the city will celebrate its newest citizens with the much-loved Baby’s First Christmas service on Saturday, December 7.

The Santa Dash, which last year attracted thousands of suited and booted runners, will be held on Sunday, December 8.

Lord Provost Eva Bolander said: “Christmas will be with us before we know it and we are already getting ready to start our celebrations with the countdown to the Christmas Lights Switch-On in George Square.

“Remember, there’s always plenty to enjoy in Glasgow with friends, family and loved ones across the city as we celebrate the festive season. I know you’ll enjoy all Glasgow has to offer this Christmas.”

More than 1500 shops in the St Enoch Centre, Buchanan Galleries, Princes Square, Argyll Arcade, John Lewis and House of Fraser will have extended opening hours throughout the period.

And with dozens of places across the city offering cosy settings for a coffee break, visitors and residents will have plenty of options to keep themselves going through the present shopping.

And once you’re run off your feet, there is a hilarious range of pantomimes and festive shows being staged in theatres across the city to keep you entertained.
