Outcry as Rangers star Morelos suffers alleged racist abuse
ANTI-RACISM campaigners have slammed the actions of fans who screamed alleged racist abuse at Rangers star Alfredo Morelos.
The Ibrox striker was subjected to vile comments after scoring in a 1-1 draw against Hearts at Tynecastle.
Now anti-racism charity Show Racism The Red Card and MSP Anas Sarwar, left, have hit back, saying there is no place for abuse in football grounds. Hearts have launched an investigation into the incident.
ANTI-RACISM campaigners have said more needs to be done to stamp out abuse in football after an investigation was launched following an incident involving Rangers’ star Alfredo Morelos.
Hearts fans are alleged to have shouted racial abuse at the striker yesterday when he scored the equalising goal for the Ibrox side in the 1-1 draw.
Video footage from the moment shows multiple fans of the Edinburgh team shouting at the striker.
Following the match the club announced the investigation, saying anyone found guilty would face a lifetime ban from the stadium.
Glasgow MSP Anas Sarwar welcomed Hearts’ threat of action.
The Labour politician said: “There can be no place for racism in football grounds or anywhere in society. These claims must be thoroughly and urgently investigated and I welcome the commitment from Hearts to take action if any individuals are found guilty.
“Recent instances of footballers facing racist abuse have highlighted how much work is still needed to stamp out hatred and intolerance, both at home and abroad.
“It is encouraging, however, that clubs and authorities are finally taking instances very seriously.
“Scotland is not immune from racism: the fight to build a more tolerant and inclusive society is a fight for all of us.”
Those who aim to rid the game from racism said education was key to ending incidents such as this.
A spokesman for Show Racism The Red Card said: “We are deeply distressed that again another horrible incident has taken place at the highest level of Scottish football.
“This abuse directed at Alfredo Morelos has been caught on live TV and circulated across social media seen by millions, yet these rising incidents of racism in football remain far outnumbered by those that do not make the headlines.
“Hearts have been made aware of the incident and are investigating it. The club are proactive in their efforts to eradicate inappropriate behaviour and we’re confident this will continue after today’s incident and necessary action will be taken.”
