Ramsey brace fires Welsh dragons into Euro 2020 finals
AARON RAMSEY scored twice as Wales beat Hungary in Cardiff to seal a place at Euro 2020.
The Juventus midfielder had not started a qualifier prior to last night’s final encounter but struck in either half for a 2-0 win that sends Ryan Giggs’ side into the draw on November 30.
Hungary finished fourth and will have to settle for a play-off place as Wales join Croatia in progressing from Group E – with Slovakia’s 2-0 victory over Azerbaijan enough for them to finish third.
Robert Bozenik and Marek Hamsik grabbed the goals but Slovakia will also head to the play-offs, as Wales ended the group a point clear.
Belgium thrashed Cyprus 6-1 to ensure they won all of their 10 Group I matches, with Kevin De Bruyne and Christian Benteke both grabbing two goals in Brussels.
A Yannick Carrasco effort and a Christoforou Kypros own goal completed the rout after Nicholas Ioannou had given the minnows a shock lead.
Second-place Russia also had a comfortable victory with a 5-0 success in San Marino.
Daler Kuzyaev, Sergei Petrov, Aleksei Miranchuk, Aleksi Ionov and Nikolai Komlichenko all got themselves on the scoresheet as San Marino finished bottom of Group I without taking a point.
The two final Group C fixtures went with recent form as Germany and Holland racked up big wins.
Bayern Munich forward Serge Gnabry helped himself to a hat-trick as Germany recovered from falling behind to hammer Northern Ireland 6-1.
A low, long-range drive from Michael Smith gave the visitors a seventh-minute lead in Frankfurt before the tables were turned.
Gnabry levelled before Leon Goretzka made sure Germany went in ahead at the break, with Gnabry completing his hat-trick before the hour-mark as Goretzka got a second and Julian Brandt topped off the win in added time.
Group G winners Poland battled back from losing the lead twice to record an entertaining 3-2 win at home to Slovenia.
Sebastian Szymanski’s early thunderbolt had Poland in front before Tim Matavz equalised for the visitors in Warsaw.
Josip Ilicic then cancelled out Robert Lewandowski’s strike only for Jacek Goralski to score the winner for Poland with nine minutes remaining.
Poland had already assured themselves of progression alongside second-placed Austria, who suffered a shock defeat in Latvia.
Pointless heading into the final game, Marcis Oss scored the only game as Latvia won 1-0 in Riga.
