Uni to boost security after sex assaults

- BY STEWART WARD

UNIVERSITY bosses say they are increasing security patrols on campus after police confirmed they are investigating a series of sexual assaults in Glasgow’s West End.

Officers are probing reports a 20-year-old woman was raped in Sutherland Lane, near Glasgow University library, in the early hours of Thursday, October 31.

However, detectives have also confirmed a man has been arrested and charged over two alleged sexual assaults in Partick and North Woodside on October 17 and a separate alleged attack in Hillhead on October 24.

University chiefs say they are now taking extra security measures including improving on-campus lighting, but have warned students to be vigilant when leaving the building late at night.

A university spokeswoman said: “There have recently been four alleged cases of sexual assault in the West End and police have charged a man in connection with three of these.

“Incidents like this are rare, but the safety of students and staff is of the utmost importance to the university.

“We work extremely closely with police and have increased security patrols and improved lighting on campus.”

She added: “If people have any concerns or information to report, they should contact our security team (0141 330 4282) or police on 101.”

Officers say the 34-year-old was charged in connection with the alleged assaults in Lawrence Street, Napiershall Street and Cranworth Street.

A report has been sent to the procurator fiscal, but police say inquiries are continuing to establish any connection with the reported rape.

A police spokeswoman said: “We can confirm inquiries are continuing following a report of the serious sexual assault of a 20-yearold woman in Sutherland Lane, near University Place, Hillhead, in the early hours of October 31.”
