Watsonians on top after super fight back

- DAVID BARNES

WATSONIANS fought their way back from 21-3 down after just half-an-hour to secure a 24-21 victory over capital city rivals Heriot’s at Myreside last night. The result eased them into a three-point lead at the top of the Super6 table with just one match of the regular campaign left to play.

Heriot’s fired out the blocks with scores from Chris Dean, James Couper and a penalty try, while Watsonians managed a solitary penalty through stand-off Lee Millar, before a Lewis Berg try, which was converted by Millar gave them a lifeline at the break.

Watsonians dominated the second 40 minutes, securing the win through a penalty try and a try from full-back Jamie Forbes.

Ayrshire Bulls can jump ahead of Heriot’s into second in the table if they beat Boroughmuir Bears at Meggetland this afternoon. Two defeats on the bounce has seen them drop to third but they are boosted today by the return from injury of former Scotland prop Gordon Reid.

“It seems like a long break from our last Super6 game, but we have trained hard and playing [a friendly] against Newcastle Falcons a fortnight ago has aided our preparation,” said head coach Peter Murchie.

“We are really focused on this weekend against Boroughmuir Bears, there seems to be a determination to swing our momentum as we approach the business end of the season.”

Bottom of the table Bears are hunting only their second win of the season, and lost 53-10 to Heriot’s last time out. The playoffs are already out of reach, but they will be desperate to finish the campaign with a flourish and are boosted by the return from injury of skipper Chris Laidlaw.
