Cinema plan for new South Side retail park

- BY DREW SANDELANDS

A SEVEN-SCREEN cinema could be built in a new retail park in the Gorbals.

Plans have been submitted to Glasgow City Council requesting permission to combine two units within the Crown Street Retail Park to make way for the 600-seat cinema and a restaurant/bar.

The site, off Cathcart Road, is currently being developed, with Aldi,

B&M, Iceland Food Warehouse, Costa and Burger King all signed up. It is part of a wider regeneration project which includes almost 400 homes.

Planning permission was first granted for a retail and restaurant development, with plans for a gym then approved in 2018. The application has been submitted by Clydebuilt LP, a joint venture between Strathclyde Pension Fund and property investment company Ediston, which was launched in 2014.

It “focuses on property opportunities within the Strathclyde area where normal market conditions have failed to deliver development and where there are regeneration opportunities”.

When the first application was submitted, a planning report stated: “The proposal would realise the redevelopment and regeneration of a major site within the Clyde Corridor area that will provide significant economic benefit, urban renewal and employment at a location that can act as a catalyst for other proposals, focused on the regeneration of the site and the wider Gorbals area.”

Plans for 388 homes, on land next to the retail park, were approved in August last year. There will be 76 onebedroom flats, 259 with two bedrooms (plus 12 two-bedroom penthouses) and 41 three-bedroom properties. The site used to be the Dixon’s Iron Foundry and then Castle Cash and Carry.
