Horne sets sights on more caps for country

-

In the merry go-round of transfers here, signings there and deals to go elsewhere, Peter Horne is happy to be staying put.

While many come and go, Horne, 30, has agreed to extend his stay with the Glasgow Warriors for another two years having signed his initial contract with the club back in 2009.

“It’s weird, every year you’re gutted to see some faces go, some of them really good friends that you’ve got good relations with,” said Horne.

“You think ‘how’s the club going to keep going, it’s going to be different, how’s it going to be?’

“But life just moves on, there are other good characters – we’ve a knack for signing really good boys. They come in, buy into what we’re doing here, and before you know you’ve got some new friends. We’re really lucky.”

Familiarity, it seems, breeds contentment for Horne who has made 400 appearances for the Warriors and should add to that tally this weekend when Glasgow welcome The Dragons to Scotstoun for another crucial PRO14 encounter.

He would, of course, prefer to be limbering up with the Scotland squad ahead of the resumption of Six Nations hostilities in Italy but Horne has not given up on his international ambitions. He added: “I’d love to be involved with Scotland but I haven’t played all that much rugby this year so I can understand what the coaches are saying.

“I spoke to Gregor (Townsend) before the tournament and he mentioned my lack of game time.

“I asked ‘is that me done, is the door closed?’ and he said ‘not at all’.

“I just turned 30 a couple of months ago but I don’t feel old, I’m still in good nick and as fit as I ever have been. Hopefully I can perform here and, you never know.”
