STAFF at Blairvadach outdoor education centre were told the sports facility could close just moments before councillors entered the City Chambers to discuss Glasgow’s budget.
They were also informed by council officers that the centre would shut this June despite being fully booked all summer and up until the end of 2021.
A campaign to save Blairvadach was launched after the SNP administration, backed by the Greens, voted to close the centre in a bid to help balance the books.
On Saturday, March 14 protesters are expected to gather outside the City Chambers to try and get the local authority to reverse its decision.
Unison, which organised the protest, is urging councillors, MSPs and MPs to join them and the families taking part.
A source told us: “We have had amazing feedback and coverage of our campaign in the last six days which we were not expecting. We are really proud of what we have achieved so far.
“It is quite shocking that we were given no prior warning of this.
“Last Thursday, we were told there would be an emergency meeting and that there was a Bill to close Blairvadach.”
Although there will be no job losses and staff will be deployed many of the 44 employees at the centre are local and could end up having to look for other opportunities.
On the day of the protest those who have benefited from the education centre will be encouraged to share their experience.
Our source added: “Blairvadach allows children from a troubled home environment rest bite as well as a residential experience. Children who don’t respond well in a classroom thrive here.
“There is no official close date. I understand the council need to save money but they will spend it on developing a replica.”
Next month’s protest will start at 11am and hopes to share the benefits Blairvadach can continue to have.
